Here at InnovaDent Dental Clinic, we’re highly experienced in treating gum disease properly.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease (Periodontitis) is a condition caused by the inflammation of the supporting structures of your teeth. It is caused by bacteria that have been allowed to accumulate in between your teeth and gums.

As gum disease progresses, the bone that holds your teeth in position starts to shrink, and over time, your teeth become loose and eventually fall out. If diagnosed and treated early, gum disease can be treated with professional intervention and excellent oral hygiene.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Gum disease can often be silent and go unnoticed for a long time. The main early sign of gum disease is bleeding when brushing your teeth. If gum disease progresses, you may notice your teeth getting loose, moving or causing pain.

During your Exmaiantion and hygiene appointments, we will always screen for gum disease by checking how healthy they are and how strongly they are attached to your teeth.

How is gum disease treated?

Your treatment depends on how extensive your gum disease is. If you have minor gum disease (Gingivitis), then a single appointment with the hygienist and some thorough brushing at home may be enough to stabilise your gums.

If you have established gum disease (periodontitis), you will require further intervention with our clinicians.

What does professional gum disease treatment involve?

Your specific treatment will be tailored to your needs. However, a common treatment pathway involves

  • A full charting of your gums, which indicates where the problem areas are specifically
  • Removal of all calculus and bacteria above and below your gums is done under local anaesthesia (often called a deep cleaning). This can take 2-3 appointments.
  • Instructions on how to you interdental brushes and what sizes you need for your gums
  • A review appointment 6 weeks after initial treatment to assess how your gums are responding
  • A follow-up appointment 3 months after treatment

In most cases, as long as you follow your clinician’s instructions, this is enough to stabilise your gum disease, and you can move on to regular maintenance visits with your hygienist every 3-6 months.

In some cases, we may need to carry out another course of ‘deep cleaning’ or refer you to a periodontal socialist.

How much does gum disease treatment cost at Innovadent?

A single session with the hygienist costs between £95 and £120.

A full course of advanced gum disease treatment will cost between £595 and £895, including all of the treatments and appointments mentioned above.
